Learning Recognition Toolkit

The Learning Recognition Toolkit provides resources to support institutions as they work to recognize, validate, and award credit or credentials for prior learning. Learning Recognition is an overarching term for Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), as well as many other processes that recognize what learners know and can do.

Millions of Americans gain knowledge and skills outside of traditional learning environments. Most of it goes unrecognized.

Higher education favors specific learning types, reinforcing barriers for historically underserved learners. This leads to persistent inequities and lower educational attainment, especially for adult learners, people of color, first-generation students, and veterans. Success depends on our systems’ recognition of their learning, not just the outcomes.
